IMA’S INTROSPECTIONS

SOLITUDE

I spend my days in solitude,
thoughts grinding in my head,
worming their way through the crevices
of my brain,
tunneling their way through my mind,
conversing with my other selves
arguing the merits of their value.
No one to share them with, they dialogue
with their own obtuse parts,
their fragmented selves,
weaving their tufts into blankets
that smother, then warm, then comfort,
then chill.
Loose ends dangle and pretend to define,
hoping to complete a tapestry,
worthy of recall,
fooling no one,
especially me.

DOWN INSIDE

I dig deep down into the past,
find darkness, vagueness,
blurred images of what used to be…me.
I stare long and hard,
try to discern
what once was…me.
Small lights flicker,
flame and die,
snuffed out by ancients puffs of
ego;
withering hands pull back the curtains
hiding…me,
revealing embers of dead dreams,
long-forgotten plans, visions.
Shards of broken pledges to myself
of what was to be…me
still lying scattered about the past,
forgotten, now remembered;
too late to sweep them up,
glue them back
or create anew?
Each moment is a new beginning,
a whole new life
on a whole new doorstep
in a whole new doorway
waiting to be entered;
a whole new path
waiting to be walked,
opens up to… me.

EMPATHETIC

My whole soul aches
when I consider
man’s inhumanity to man.
Rage takes over to obliterate
this mirror of
our hate,
our fear,
our insecurity,
our uncertainty.
Tears burn,
eyes blur as I weep
for the divine
of our-selves,
the demise
of our-selves,
the destruction…
of our-selves.

CAUGHT

My disorganization is catching up with me.
Trapped like a fly in a spider’s web,
overwhelmed by stuff,–
Tar Baby and the weasel,–
locked in my own interests and seeking,
fighting my way out of a plastic bag
that does not yield,
only stretches.
Smothered in idle pieces of memorabilia,
sinking in memories I don’t want to let go of,
drowning in life and life’s stuff.
Given this all-consuming interest
in so many things,
it’s strangling me!
Head swimming, foggy, trying to locate something
that needs to be dealt with now.
It was where I put it when I gathered it,
now replaced by other stuff
that was important at the time.
Too much time – a day? – has passed since
it was gathered
and now it can’t be used
because it can’t be found!
Whittle it down!
There’s got to be light at the end of this tunnel,
that is, if this is a tunnel and not a cave and
that is a light and not an oncoming train.

AEROBIC EXERCISES, HUH?

When those beautiful people who smiled so smugly from my TV set insisted that it was time I got actively involved in a Diet/Exercise Program, I got HOPPING mad and offered them this reply:

I’m PUSHING 55, and every day I’m regularly engaged in PUNCHING the clock, SWIMMING in ignorance, DIVING into my work, JOGGING my memory, WRESTLING with my conscience, LEAPING to conclusions, BENDING over backward, and BENDING the rules.

“I’m SKIPPING lunch, but I’m CHEWING the fat, EATING my words, and SWALLOWING my pride. Afternoons I’m either WALKING around in circles or RUNNING with the crowd. I’m LIFTING my spirit, PUMPING up my ego, PADDLING my own canoe, STRETCHING my imagination, KICKING old habits, PULLING strings, SKATING on thin ice, PRESSING issues, REACHING my limit, TOUCHING base, EXERCISING my options, WEIGHING the outcome, and SWEATING it out!

AEROBICS ? ? Who needs it?”

CHANGE…A JESS RANT

Beware of the “Status Quo-ers”, who will try to deflate the movement for change. They are of both parties. They are not bad people and pigmentation and gender are not determinants. They are just persons who are comfortable with “What is” and are suspicious of change. They have adjusted to the present conditions, even those that they suspect are wrong. They have developed relationships and alliances that they are reluctant to sever.

The “Status-Quo-ers” are confronting a movement that is being driven primarily by the young and they have forgotten what it’s like to be young and vibrant and idealistic and impatient with injustice.

Some of the “Status-Quo-ers” agree with the objectives of the movement but are fearful of the disruption that it will cause if the changes are too rapid:

They know that inadequate Health Care is a problem and may agree that Medicare for All makes sense.

They know that Gerrymandered districts are ridiculous.

They know that the burning of Fossil Fuels contribute to Climate Change.

They know that Money is Not Speech and Citizens United must go.

They know that the Electoral College is an abomination whose only reason for being is to obstruct the popular will of the people.

They know that there should be a Standardized Ballot for all National Elections and that Election Day should either be a National Holiday or moved to the weekend.

They know that voting is so crucial to democracy that it should be a felony offense for anyone to impede, obstruct, suppress or in any way hamper a citizen’s right and ability to vote, punishable by incarceration as well as fine.

They also know that since the Airwaves belong to We, the People, All Qualified Candidates should have access to the Airwaves. Corporations should not be allowed to use campaigns and elections as cash cows for exorbitant profits. With our current travel and communications technology, there’s no reason for 2-year campaign seasons.

They know that for a country of 325 millions of people of various identities and historical experiences to have only 2 viable political parties is ludicrous. We need multiple parties and greater representation:

The number of Representatives in Congress has been fixed at 435 since the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, resulting in a current ratio of one representative/700,000 citizens, contrary to the Constitutional instruction that the ratio be no greater than one/30,000 citizens; this makes us the most under-represented Democracy of the industrialized world.

They know that War is Foolish and that Perpetual War is Insanity.

They also know that it is legitimate and desirable and necessary to question Israel’s occupation and treatment of the Palestinians. And since we give 3.8 billion dollars yearly to the Israeli military, it is our Right, it is our Duty to question its use.

The Status Quo is currently being challenged, and understandably some who are and have been part of the Status Quo are defensive and protective of it.

Change is … and will be!
